There is a dangerous phrase in almost every ECM migration project:
"Just move everything."
Please don't.
Migrating into Laserfiche is an opportunity to improve information management, not faithfully recreate every questionable decision made in the previous system.
At JPI, we recommend five principles.
First, know what you have. Identify document volumes, formats, metadata, security requirements, integrations, retention requirements, and duplicate or obsolete information before migration begins.
Second, clean before you move. If information has no business, compliance, or historical value, determine whether it should make the trip. Moving unnecessary content consumes storage and makes the new environment harder to manage.
Third, design metadata for tomorrow. Don't automatically duplicate an old folder structure. Consider how employees search for information, how workflows will use it, and how AI tools such as Smart Fields may classify and extract information going forward.
Fourth, test with real documents and real users. A technically successful migration can still fail operationally. Validate searches, security, metadata, OCR quality, workflows, integrations, and user access before declaring victory.
Finally, plan for adoption. Users need to understand not only where their information went but how their daily work improves in the new environment.
